About Your Trainer John R. Abbott
I've been in love with horses since I was 10 years old. My start was riding western on a welsh pony. Riding in 4-H, while learning about different styles of riding I switched to Jumping which I truly enjoyed and that began my journey into the Hunter Jumper world.
I owned a couple of other horses before buying a Thorough bred gelding named Ben's Best (later called Narrow Escape). He was trained in dressage by Chuck Grant in Michigan and he taught me about dressage movements as he had been trained and shown to 4th level. This brought me to another level of knowledge and I did end up showing a bit in the dressage world at various venues in Michigan. My trainer and I also taught Ben to jump and he became my Child's/Junior Hunter. Our horses were versatile in those days!
Through the last 30 years I've shown Hunters extensively, Having had 2 show barns in the process and travelling the east coast to AA shows. Today, I am honing and focusing my personal interests of quality young horse development and training. Thus this web site. Please take a look at the horses I represent. Some are young up and coming, some are seasoned horses. All good quality and worth a look to see if it might fit your needs.
Education
2015
USEF "R" Hunter, Hunter Breeding, Hunter Equitation Judge
I have had the honor to have studied (while getting my license) with Joey Darby, Bucky Reynolds, Linda Andrisani, Diane Carney, Mike Rosser, Tony Sgarlata to name a few. I felt well guided with these knowledgeable people.
As a Breeding Judge it has increased my knowledge of conformation and horse athleticism, as well as helping scrutinize flaws that could inhibit soundness and athletic abilities.
When I was a junior I purchased a Thoroughbred gelding that had 3rd level dressage training. It gave me the opportunity to learn about balance and classical horsemanship and training. My coach at the time also helped me teach this horse to jump as a Junior Hunter. I have since used Dressage methods in all my training of young horses.
